Top 2 Revealed

top3_carlyelim-2.jpgLast night on Canadian Idol’s one hour result show the Top2 finalists were revealed. It was a performance packed episode with three former Idol contestants taking the stage.

The show opened with the Top 3 singing Sass Jordan’s “I Want To Believe”. This truly was the worst Top 3 group performance I’ve heard. Yikes! What the heck happened with Jaydee and Carly Rae at the beginning of the song?

Season 2 contestant Jacob Hoggard hit the stage with his band Hedley. Their new single “She’s So Long” was surprisingly good. I say this because I am definitely not a Jacob fan. However one song was enough from Jacob – his manic performances exhaust me. Hedley’s new CD Famous Last Words will be released October 30th. Season one winner Ryan Malcolm and his band Low Level Flight performed their new single “Say” from the new CD Urgency. I’m not a huge Ryan Malcolm fan but it was better than I expected.

The Idols went home last weekend and we saw their homecomings – all had well attended concerts and lots of media coverage. Back on the Idol stage Jaydee performed It’s Only Make Believe” (Conway Twitty) from the Top 10 week. Carly Rae performed Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn”. Brian Melo sang “She Talks To Angels” (Black Crowes) from the Top 8 week. I really enjoyed all three performances – maybe more than some of them last night.

kalan_top3-2.jpgSeason 3 winner Kalan Porter returned to the Idol stage to sing his new hit single “Down In Heaven” from the CD Wake Up Living. Seeing him and Jacob on the stage tonight reminded me what an amazing season of Canadian Idol that was three years ago. Kalan’s performance was confident and polished – what a treat to see him again.

Now for the results! Brian announced over 4.1 million votes were cast on Monday night. The contestant with the fewest votes was 21 year old Carly Rae Jepsen. Not surprising but I was hoping for a Brian/Carly Rae finale. The last female contestant closed the show with an emotional performance of Dido’s “White Flag”. What an interesting and unique competitor. I loved Carly Rae’s song choices and although I never thought she’d win I’m happy she got this far.

top2_3-2.jpgNext week the Final Two – 17 year old Jaydee Bixby and 25 year old Brian Melo will sing 3 songs each -one Bon Jovi song, the winners single and one song that best represents them as an artist. Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora will mentor the two finalists in New York City. The two hour season finale will air next Tuesday night with special guests Bon Jovi, Avril Lavigne and last years Idol winner Eva Avila. Who will wear the Idol crown a week today?
