Top 5 – “My Own Idol” Theme

brian_top5-2.jpgLast night the theme on Canadian Idol was artists who inspire the Top 5. Kelly Clarkson was the mentor and kudos to the Canadian Idol producers for getting her to coach the contestants. Kelly, the original American Idol brought out the very best in each singer and no question this was the best show to date.

The evening opened with Matt Rapley’s “Higher Ground” (Stevie Wonder). Kelly thought his voice was really beautiful but wanted him not to worry so much about the notes but to get into the song and get people clapping. Matt definitely took Kelly’s advice to heart and gave an outstanding performance. Matt’s “Whipping Post” may still be my favourite performance but this would be a close second. Matt gave a very passionate and believable performance with his powerhouse vocals. What a great start to the night!

Jake – love the fact you chose the Red Hot Chile Pepper’s version. You took Kelly’s advice – fierce performance, really fine job.

Farley – I’m so happy you took Kelly’s advice. When you mean business, business get’s done.

Sass – doesn’t matter if it’s perfectly in tune, what matters is the heart and soul – intense.

Zack – …. you stepped up represented the song that’s what you belong doing, kicked the thing!

2) Dwight d’Eon followed with Bon Jovi’s “Bed Of Roses”. Kelly Clarkson felt his voice was dramatic, had a lived raspy feel. She felt that when he sang a song it was like he wrote it. Dwight opened his performance playing the piano something we haven’t seen from him. Definitely a very smart song choice for Dwight. He really sold this song – vocals not always the best but definitely a confident, polished performance.

Farley – absolutely best performance you’ve done.

Sass – roses in bed – best you’ve done and in-tune

Zack – best performance, good as you can sing, however don’t sing well enough to win competition.

Jake – beginning a bit shaky overall really good song, powerful

3) Jaydee Bixby sang “I Can’t Stop Loving You” (Elvis Presley). No surprise that Jaydee would sing Elvis. Kelly thought he had the loudest voice and wondered what kind of CD he would do. (Jaydee said country). She also thought he had an 80 year old trapped in his young body. Okay I didn’t like the song at all, stage performance was stiff as usual but it was one of his better vocal performances.

Sass – you sang for your supper, kick-ass job, quite impressed

Zack -…fact is you should be happy if you get voted off to go do your thing

Jake – rhythm side little bit to be desired….you sing a lot like the guy maybe you should move to Vegas

Farley – fantastic performance, you have not swayed from your vision. You cared about song and performance

4) Carly Rae Jepsen sang “Chuck E’s In Love” (Rickie Lee Jones). Carly Rae used to sing this song when she was eight years old. Kelly thought her voice was cute. Kelly thought Carly Rae was the most comfortable of all the competitors. For the most part Carly Rae has been smart about song choices the whole season and this was no exception. I loved this performance! It was beautiful, a fun delivery in Carly’s distinct style.

Zack – Jake said it once – be loved – be loveable, be remembered be memorable

Jake – nervous when I saw you were singing this but I was really impressed,

Farley – wonderful, adorable, tonight, use of stage very professional, you understand how to perform

Sass – charming – ray of sunshine, lovely

5) Brian Melo closed the show with “Karma Police” (Radiohead). Kelly loved that he picked Radiohead. She thought he had a beautiful rasp to his voice and didn’t need any advice from her. Brian’s performance was an emotional experience from start to finish. His raw vocals were amazing and it was the most passionate, sincere performance I think we’ve seen all season. Definite goose-bump moments tonight!

Jake – hope people at home understand what they saw, one of the most magical moments ever on the show

Farley- you made your family, town and the four of us very proud

Sass – like I was at a Brian Melo concert, insane

Zack – ….Mr. & Mrs. Melo – your son might be the next Canadian Idol.

Top 3 Performances

Brian Melo

Matt Rapley

Carly Rae Jepsen

Bottom 2

Jaydee Bixby

Dwight d’Eon

Jaydee definitely had the weakest performance and should be going home tonight. Even though Dwight just gave his best performance to date I think he’ll be the one packing up. Have a feeling Carly Rae may join him in the bottom 2.

Last night’s performance show was one of the best yet this season. Kelly Clarkson seemed very down to earth and gave great advice to the Idols. Tonight Kelly Clarkson sings two songs from her third CD “My December”.

Last post for a couple of weeks. I’m off to Europe for the next ten days. Will do a quick recap of next week’s show “The Top 4 sing the Standards” when I return.
