Top 3 Sing Tony Bennett

tony_bennett_photo2.jpgAccording to the Globe & Mail Tony Bennett told Eva Avila that “if he were a judge on the show, he’d give her a 10″. A few songs from tonight’s show were revealed in the article – Eva will be performing “God Bless the Child” and “They Can’t Take That Away From Me”, Craig Sharpe will sing “Danny Boy” and Tyler Lewis - “It Had to Be You”. The 80 year old crooner will sing Tuesday night in a special one hour results show. The Idols were in New York to meet with the singing legend in preparation for the ”Tribute to Tony Bennett” episode tonight.

Top 4 Results Show

chadtop4_ (2).jpgBen announced last night on Canadian Idol that 4.3 million votes were cast Monday night making this a Canadian Idol record. The Top 4 sang “When I See You Smile ” and I have to say after hearing this they should give up on group performances. The Idols massacred this song – stop the pain! Rex Goudie performed his hit. Rex announced that his new CD will be coming up December 5th. I find Rex to be one of the most likable Idols we’ve ever had but he certainly has a limited vocal range. Elaina Juatco did a “You be the Judge” bit with the Top 4 that was almost as bad as the group song. Enough said. Ben announced the bottom two contestants with the least amount of votes were Tyler and Chad. This was Tyler’s first time in the bottom and it is long overdue. Unfortunately, Chad is the one going home. He closed the show with REM’s Everybody Hurts. I have to say I’m really going to miss Chad. I didn’t like his performances every week and he really should have been gone after the Stone’s show but he also had some beautiful understated moments with his truly unique voice.Next week we’ll hear the Top 3 sing the classics in a tribute to Tony Bennett. I can’t wait for this show – I already know it will be my favorite of the season. However, the thought of Tyler singing Tony Bennett …okay maybe I might be cringing just a bit.

Top 4 – Judge’s Choice!

evatop4 (2).jpg

Last night on Canadian Idol the judge’s picked the songs for the Top 4. It wasn’t the most exciting show and I think we can blame the judges for their poor song selection.Tyler Lewis opened the show with “Big League”( Tom Cochrane). If this was supposed to challenge Tyler it did and not in a good way. You couldn’t hear his lower register and he barely hit the big notes. His stage “rocking” was distracting and I’m not sure why he continues to stand there bouncing up and down. It was not a good beginning to the night and certainly not a great start for Tyler.Chad Doucette was up next and sang “Hanging By a Moment” (Lifehouse). I thought the beginning was very weak but he certainly felt more comfortable by the end of the song. Chad was nervous and it showed in his first performance.

Craig Sharpe was handed “Careless Whisper” (WHAM) from the judges and this was a brilliant song choice. Craig gave a flawless performance and I enjoyed this from start to finish. He may be only 16 but his phrasing and pitch perfect voice was impressive to say the least. This had to be Craig’s best performance so far.

Eva Avila sang “Would I Lie to You” (Eurythmics) and everything about this performance was perfect. I don’t know if it was because I was watching the show in her home province but Eva a ete la meilleure de la soiree! Eva was confident working the stage and delivered pitch perfect vocals.

Tyler’s second song was “Tears In Heaven” (Eric Clapton). I don’t know how different it sounded to the judges at the John Bassatt Theatre but I thought this was dreadful. Tyler definitely had some pitch problems and instead of being an emotional performance it was tentative and underwhelming. Tyler could be in trouble!

Chad’s second performance of the night was “Everybody Hurts” (REM). The judges picked a perfect song for his unique sounding voice. He gave a very sincere performance and he looked and sounded very confident. This is the Chad I love when he just sings – no theatrics.

Craig sang “Tears of a Clown” (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles) and I thought this performance was good but not fantastic. The judge’s failed Craig with this song choice and I thought his dancing through the audience took away from his performance.

Eva closed the show with “Old Skool Love” (Devine Brown). I was disappointed when I heard Eva would be performing this but the song could have been written for her. Her amazing voice and confidence put her miles above anyone else on stage tonight.

Overall I was disappointed with the judges’s choice of songs for the Top 4. Tyler will definitely be in the bottom but with his huge fan base he probably will be around another week.

Theresa Sokyrka was in the audience tonight promoting her new CD Something is Expected. I love Theresa’s new single”Waiting Song” and I can’t wait to hear the album. However, I always feel Theresa is talking out of both sides of her mouth about distancing herself from Idol but now giving away free CD’s on the show!

Season 3 runner-up Rex Goudie will be performing his single “Run” tonight.
